Hey, Guys & Gals. I made this Flash Foes Player before the big re-branding occurs. What? You haven't heard yet? Yes. Ryan T. will be casting several new and catchier tunes loose with new dudes in a new place. So, before these old gems escaped our memories, I wanted to package them up and digitally imprint them onto the interwebs where nothing is ever really forgotten. Thank you, Ryan and Joe. Thank you, Seattle people.

Apparently, Blogger.com won't allow the player buttons to appear in this post. But all the flash goodness and functionality can be FOUND HERE. Thanks, ya'll.

We're No Longer "Friendly"

If you've been here before, you may now notice how our banner no longer reads The Friendly Foes. This is due to the fact that we have officially shortened our band's name. We're The Foes now. There are a few reasons for this:

1. The dot com became available!
2. There is already a band called Friendly Foes. They're from Michigan.
3. We talked it over, and even though we feel that we are indeed a friendly band, we are not so friendly as to warrant the adjective friendly right in our band name.

So there you have it. We've changed our dot com and our myspace. We're The Foes now. And don't worry. Title aside, we're really no less friendly than we were before.

Rendevous Reminiscing

Michelle was kind enough to send the pictures she took of the incredibly fun show at The Rendevous. Thanks, Michelle!

This canted camera angle suggests that we are rocking even harder than we usually do. Joe played a baby blue bass for the set. He compensated by growing a Brad Pitt style beard.

Nobody rocks mallots like Brandon. And I would know because I've seen every mallot player in the world.

Jules Maes Highlights, Joe Attends Wedding

Joe has a wedding to attend, and a concert at which to perform! Will Joe make it to BOTH his engagements?! You will have to play the video to find out!

We'd like to thank Jenny and Jules Maes for having us Saturday. We had a great time, and we'll look forward to coming back. Thanks to those who were able to attend the show at Jules Maes. Y'all are the best, and we really appreciate your support.

Here we are playing some real psychedelic shit.

I had to drive my friend Fyl all the way to Kirkland after the show, because he harbors an innate fear of late night public transportation.

It is a shame you cannot HEAR this picture, because Brandon is playing the drum roll of his life.

Those who frequent the site may have noticed that until recently, our flash player could only play one song. Some may have even thought it would forever only play one song. Well guess what, naysayers...now it plays TWO songs. This video explains the science behind our improved flash player.

A first on my 31st

Today, I am posting my first blog ever. It is also my 31st birthday. Ryan has put so much work into the Friendly Foes that the least I can do is post a blog every once in a while... and play drums too. I'm afraid that I will have to keep my very first blog ever rather brief... I am so stinky from an awesome hike at Wallace Falls in... Snohomish? I can't believe that wife is willing to sit right next to me. Do you remember that character on Charlie Brown that walked around with some sort of dirt or odor cloud around him all the time? That is me. Right now. I guess I should be blogging about the Friendly Foes and not my stench. A recording is in progress right now. We are working on getting the songs posted to this site but for now you can check out some others on our Myspace thingy. Alright. Shower-time.

How and Why the Website was Built

When I look at a lot of band’s websites, (including the website I built for my old comedy band, The Taking Tree) I notice a couple of problematic consistencies. These have to do with how often the websites are updated, and the information they are able to provide. For our site, I wanted the entire band (and not just the uh—“computer guy”) to be able to update and post whenever whoever feels like posting.

Now The Friendly Foes do have a MySpace page from which we could blog, but who wants to subject visitors to MySpace’s constant advertising or seemingly consistent downtime?! Click here to see a MySpace post regarding my personal distain for MySpace. I wanted our band to be able to take responsibility for the content on our page.

For the same reasons I didn’t want to use MySpace, I didn’t want to use Blogger. My friend Fyl and I had a short conversation about this. Sites designed with Blogger often look very similar, and they all have this telling bar at the top that pretty much screams, “I did not build this myself!” As it turns out, though, one can use Blogger to build your database without subjecting oneself to the Blogger’s trademark bar. And apparently, as long as one is not hosting a site Blogger’s web space, one is free to remove the Blogger paraphernalia.

So that is what I did. This site is founded upon Blogger technology. And now any band member can post to our blog right from his web browser.

I didn't want our blog to look like every other blog; I found a great template generator called PsycHo. It does a nice job of coding sleek and simple designs for blogs. I copied the HTML code from PsycHo and pasted it using Blogger’s “Template” page. Indeed, Blogger even allows you to edit your own source code without a seperate FTP application! From there, it was just a matter of tweaks and improving functionality.

Because this is a band’s blog, we had to make our music accessible. I found a nice flash player and entered that into our source code. I also made our logo a link back to our homepage, so that our visitors don’t get too lost.

All in all, I did a very minimal amount of coding myself, but I feel I was able to make our blog astectically pleasing, functional for visitors, and easy for the band to update.

Now if only I could get Brandon and Joe to type some posts...

The Friendly Foes' History

I (Ryan) wanted to get my chubby finger on the pulse of a thriving music scene when I moved to Seattle in November of '06. Joe (of Oxide, BomberMan Awesome, and Stencil fame) was always supportive of my glory-whoredom. He was kind enough to play a few gigs as the counterpart to a comedic music project I'd worked on all through college called The Taking Tree.

Joe and I performed exactly twice as The Taking Tree. Once at The Comedy Underground here in Seattle for an open mic, and once at The Comedy Underground here in Seattle for a short ten minute set. Both those shows went really well.

The Taking Tree shows were fun, but I'd been performing comedic songs for about four years. And there are those who would say that I'd been performing comedic songs for about four years too long. Perhaps Bender of Futurama said it best:

"Let's face it, comedy's a dead art form. Tragedy, now that's funny."

Enter The Friendly Foes.

My sister Starley had recently moved to Seattle with her husband, a dashing young fellow named Brandon. That sister of mine did well for herself; Brandon is one of the friendliest people you'll ever meet, and of equal if not greater importance, he plays drums! Brandon and I were excited to get into some music, and once he was aboard, I set sights to Joe.

Joe had never been the front man of a rock band, even though he'd played in them since he was thirteen or so. I'd never really written "serious" songs before, so Joe and I had something in common in that we were both trying something new. I played Somehow for Joe. Joe played what would become Requiem for a Girl for me.

Brandon, Joe and I practiced for about six months before our first public appearance, an open mic at the Skylark Cafe in West Seattle. We had a great time, and based on our performance there, we were able to finagle a full set with Jet Lag Palm and Gunbunny.
